Since publishing our article Artificial Intelligence – are we ready for a fall? , freshly resigned former researcher at Anthropic Jacob Coxon claimed on X, that AI corporations are “gambling with our lives”. He went on to say “The people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade”. And Coxon isn’t the only AI expert saying it, putting the likelihood of it happening at 10%.
Is the scramble by competing AI companies to creaate “super intelligent” AI systems, leaving those systems out of control? Anthropic’s head of threat intelligence, Jacob Klein, added to a report from the company that said they had already blocked their systems from efforts to make it design biological weapons, saying “You are not seeing someone in a comic book kind of way say, ‘Hey, I want to build a biological weapon to kill everybody,’ It’s an incredibly nuanced situation.”
Co-founder of the non-profit Guidelight AI Standards, Steven Adler advised “No AI company is even close to having the right security posture for the level of danger entailed by their research”. Should that reassure us after the spate of revelations recently (see our earlier piece linked above).
So as if these AI conglomerates don’t kill us through the environmental devastation their energy and water consumption , or the economic destabilisation that their AI bubble bursting might bring, the machines themselves could well be able to eradicate humanity in due course
