I have long despaired at the appalling numbers of deaths related to the destructive policy agendas of the billionaire media.
It is something that is never spoken about, as the media billionaires control almost all our media.
So when I was invited to speak about the capture of our democracy by the billionaire media owners, at the #MediaDemocracyFestival, I asked this question of my co-director of the Media Sovereignty Act Campaign, Caspar Hughes:
Should I dare take the emotional risk of inviting the souls of all who have been killed by the media billionaires into the conference hall?
He said I absolutely should.
But when it came to it, I ran out of time with my speech and was unable to do so.
But then a respected activist from Just Stop Oil in the audience, Mel Carrington asked me how could we persuade activists who had given up on the political process, to believe that a petition to trigger a debate in parliament, was worth backing?
I answered her, that as someone who had been repeatedly arrested for peacefully protecting for Occupy Democracy, Extinction Rebellion and Palestine Action, that I really got her question.
But said that I felt the way to do that was to bring the emotion of all the losses of all the countless victims of the media billionaires into the debate.
And so I invited into the room….
The souls of all the indigenous peoples killed in our rainforests by the meat and oil industries promoted by the billionaire media, especially naming the Brazilian Yanomami, of whom I am an honorary member.
The souls of all the kids and adults killed on our roads, due to the War on Kids waged by the billionaire media who oppose every measure to make our roads safer for kids to walk or cycle to school.
The souls of all the Iraqi civilians and British soldiers killed in the illegal Iraq war advocated for by the billionaire media.
The souls of all the refugees drowned in the English Channel, after the billionaire media demanded all legal routes to the UK for the refugees from the wars they advocated for were closed down.
The souls of all the 10,000s of British pensioners dying of winter cold, after the billionaire media demanded the destruction of the government’s home insulation programme.
The souls of all those who have already died from the climate crisis and the millions who will die in coming years, with the billionaire media still waging a 24/7 propaganda war against climate action.
The souls of all the 10,000s of Palestinian kids and their parents in Gaza, from the billionaire media backed zionist genocide in Palestine.
The souls of the millions dying in the global south after the billionaire media for years demanded we slash our international aid budgets.
The souls of the trans people who have committed suicide following the flood of transphobic attacks in the billionaire media.
The souls of the prisoners murdered or who committed suicide in British jails after the government slashed prison budget at urging of the billionaire media.
And the list goes on… Jamie Lowe captured the emotional moment on camera and we have just released it on our social media:
In their name, please help us trigger a debate in Parliament on the Media Sovereignty Act that ends media billionairism for good.
If you are eligible, lease sign and share and share their parliamentary petition:
