The shenanigans in the Labour Party continue. After the abysmal local election results at the beginning of May, it looks like Starmer is toast. But the candidates for leader are all tainted and woeful. Enter once again Andy Burnham!
He needs to get elected as an MP sharpish if he wants to take on Starmer. Josh Simons, the disgraced Labour Together MP for Makerfield, has duly resigned, seeing that his career as an MP was all but over anyway, making way for Burnham in a seat that is almost local for him. Hallelujah!
The NEC has decided that this time he can be the candidate and the local Labour Party has selected him unopposed. At least there is some measure of local initiative this time, but for all Burnham’s likeability, the process smacks of a stitch-up just the same. It seems that Simons has been offered a future role by Burnham, if he becomes an MP and then the PM. And is Burnham already wooing the Labour right with promises of roles in his squeaky-clean “new” New Labour project?
Why do I remain unconvinced?
